Matthew Williamson pre-spring 09 collection: looks like.. H&M?

I suspect that I’m not alone scouring the internet for a shred of fabric sneak-peeking the Matthew Williamson collaborative collection with fast-fashion retailer H&M.

While we search and wait, we might as well play the guessing game of what might be on the retail racks by looking at what Williamson had in mind for the pre-spring 09 collection.

This collection is typical Williamson: the clothes have structure but delineate soft shapes, are fun but also chic, and would suit a variety of body shapes and personal styles. In short, the pre-spring 09 collection is very.. H&M?

Nothing says spring like the peeking ankles below slim cuffed saphire trousers with cropped kimono (below). This collection’s mix of fabrics (knits, cottons, silks, velour) and colours (tangerine, emerald, neon, saphire, oyster) is bridged using appliqué and broaches, bringing cohesion and intricate detailing to the pre-spring look book.

Defining Williamson’s work is his interest in colourful geometric patterns. Within the same print, Williamson’s play with fabric weight and design masterfully suggest different thematic heritage. The green coat below could be vintage, but its blown-up diamonds droop into a back-less modern day dress, cut a Bohemian length, hold a ’50s shape and paint a form-fitting leotard. Williamson hits key notes of fashion history while keeping the styling in present-day context.
