I wasn’t sure what I would find that I like at mega-show The One of a Kind. Of course I expected to see lots of pottery, hand-blown decorations, watches with interchangeable wrist-bands (“you can pick any three you like!”), little pots of lotions here and jars of hot pepper jelly there, hand-knitted, hand-embellished, hand-carved, hand painted… Basically everything handled in some way by a crafty human.

I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed with jewelry designer Dandi Maestre’s work but I was hoping that there would be a few happy discoveries waiting for me. And that’s when I met Sasha, the creator of Track and Field Designs in Vancouver. The talented young designer produces silk-screened laptop bags and pouches, bird-printed magnets and pins, and adorable owl brooches. And they’re all hand-made.

My timing was perfect: I recently purchased a shiny new laptop (that survived a major water spill- thanks, Kitty) and I had been thinking of buying a neoprene skin for it even though I wasn’t loving the solid colours for neoprene skins. The One of a Kind Show delivered: at Sasha’s booth I found fantastic  vintage-inspired prints silk-screened and tailored to perfection for my laptop. Printed doilies and fawns, large owls, small birds- the wildlife was aplenty.

The laptop bag I chose is a red cotton fabric from Japan with linen-coloured polka-dots. Silk-screened in black on one side is an antique typewriter. The lining is a soft robin’s egg colour- a perfect match with the exterior fabric.

I’ve become Track and Field’s newest happy customer- with 319 positive reviews on Etsy, I’m in good company feeling proud of my $48 purchase. Yes, I can sew and I could probably whip up a laptop bag for myself over the weekend, but what am I actually going to do that? Prolly not; and would it have a retro typewriter silk-screened on the font? That’s a stretch.

I'm good, but I'm not this good.
