Kate Spade's clothing collection delivers fun and quirky.

Kate Spade’s designs are synonymous with cheeky polka-dots, bright colour accents, and vintage-inspired classics. The new clothing collection is young and invites you to dress up with a quirky twist- the Kate Spade way.

The collection boasts some staples dressed up three ways each: the Madeleine Dot blouse, the Beacon Hill Gail dress, the Bisous Tamaris Swing jacket, the Bisous Cassie shirt dress, and the Madeleine Mona coat. The lookbook is detailed with cutesy lettering in white dots describing the mood of the scene for each outfit. Maybe it’s just me, but this collection seems decidedly girly, with all its fun pieces and colour punches calculated to make every 30-something professional in the publishing industry swoon.

And while I can envision these classic pieces becoming wardrobe favourites for many seasons on many different women, the campaign’s targeting reminds me of the strong Audrey Hepburn pitch from Isaac Mizrahi for Liz Claiborne this past spring. Behemoth label Liz Claiborne, who bought the Kate Spade brand a couple of years ago, is obviously concerned with targeting the young, smart and snazzy professional women.

Here, under the creative flair of Deborah Lloyd, Co-President and Creative Director at Kate Spade, the label takes a turn at reviving the iconic youthful beauty of Audrey Hepburn in these images. We’re not complaining- we just know that anything Audrey is particularly ‘in’ right now and everyone’s trying to get a piece of that sparkle. And we like it.

The Collection

The pieces are accessibly priced for a designer line out of the big fancy city of New York. The embellished Gail dress retails for $395, the berry-pink Bisous Tamaris Swing short jacket is $495, and the Mona coat is $745. The cropped faux-fur jacket (pictured top) is particularly sweet at $695 and while it seems a bit high, the jacket is memorable enough that it would make an entrance anywhere, year after year.

The Shoes

The collection is expertly accessorized with old Hollywood glamour heels, vintage comfort flats, and sexy peep-toe pumps. Paired with solid-colour opaque tights, many shoes in the collection get a face-lift as more casual wear.

The Handbags

Leather and fabric handbags range between $195-$495 and include fuchsia and lime green patent-leather totes, cream-and-black classics with gold hardware, and hounds-tooth and polka-dotted fabric trimmed with leather. There’s something for everyone- from the evening-to-day crowd to the casual tote and the fun clutch. The collection is largely structured according to geometry class- lots of circles, rectangles, and squares. Clean lines define a serious cut, colour adds the flair.

Pearls, pearls, and more pearls. Kate Spade’s collection does them in classic neutral shades as well as bright coral. Also in volume are crystals in jewel tones on rings, earrings, and necklaces. The mood is vintage and the pieces are definitely keepsakes.
