Trend-Spotting: Pretty in Purple

You might associate the colour purple with royalty… which it was back in the olden days because, well, it took just about a gazillion shellfish to make a bit of purple dye to adorn the nobility. Luckily, these days purple is a tad more accessible for us common folk – and we have been seeing it in a range of shades on modern Hollywood royalty for a while now.

Beyond sexy dresses, purple has been showing its pretty face as a big makeup colour. Below are some tips on incorporating purple into your beauty life, whether or not you’re an actual princess.

Starting Slow

If you’re shy with jewel tones, start slow with a pale lavender wash on your eyelids with a darker shade in the crease.  Try Bare Escentuals’ chemical-free bareMinerals eyeshadow in Purple Heights and Bordeaux for the right look without the bad stuff.

To add some pop to your eyes without opting for a full set of coloured lashes, dab some purple mascara on to just the ends of your lashes. Urban Decay makes a few coloured mascaras, including a dark purple that you can add to your regular lash-primping routine.

Revving Up

Feeling bolder yet? Cover your lashes with a couple of coats of purple mascara and try a purple eyeliner for vibrantly-coloured eyes that will be impossible to miss. To get a precise line for defined eyes, try Kat Von D’s sparkling liquid liner designed especially for Sephora in Homie, a dark violet, or Turbo Lover, a metallic plum.

For a smokier eye, smudge the line gently with a moistened eyeliner brush or Q-tip to soften the line while holding onto the colour.

With the strong eye looks described here, you want to keep lips pale, even nude-coloured (another fall trend!) so that attention is fully on your pretty peepers – unless you want to go full blast…

Full Blast

If you want to immerse yourself in the purple life, move beyond your eyes to lips, nails and maybe even hair… today’s purple lipsticks aren’t the goth variety – they are gentle and feminine, although you still want to be careful with application to avoid looking bruised or really really cold. NARS makes some seriously glam lipstick shades, including Klute (a frosted lilac), Tanganyka (a sheer plum brown) and Damage (a sheer grape). These three shades are muted enough that you can wear them with purple eye makeup without the overall look being garish – apply lightly at first and build up layer by layer for added intensity.

FIM has already covered the purple trend in OPI nail colour right here – try the Pamplona Purple for fingernails, with the darker Give Me Moor! on your toenails for contrast.

Finally, if you are ready to commit your lovely locks over to the royal colour, try L’Oreal Superior Preference in Deepest Plum which will make your hair will shimmer purple in the light – just in time for fall’s changing colours!  Light-haired ladies be forewarned: this shade will be dramatically dark on your blonde, red or light brown strands and it’s permanent hair colour, so be very sure that you are very committed before you open the box.
