Back to School/Work: What to Wear (On Your Face)

September 8, 2009

Lanvin Suit
Labour Day signals back to school for some of us and, for others, a short summery break before the daily work grind restarts. Whether you’re heading back to campus or back to long weekend anecdotes around the water cooler, this might just be the perfect time to (re)evaluate your daytime face.

Base

Heavy cover-up does not work for daytime, especially under those pesky fluorescent lights ubiquitous in classrooms and offices. Try a sheer light-reflecting foundation in a shade matched to your skin tone, such as Stila’s Illuminating Foundation which provides sheer-to-medium coverage. For an even more natural look, swap the foundation for a tinted moisturizer for the lightest coverage while still evening out skin tone.

To soak up shine through the day, try blotting papers rather than powder to avoid clogging your pores. Try The Body Shop’s Lavender Chamomile Facial Blotting Tissues which as a bonus contain a touch of lavender and chamomile oils to soothe your skin.

Eyes

There are many exciting high-voltage makeup options for eyes this fall, but for that 9:00am class or meeting, you might want to opt for a more muted, neutral look.

Start by curling lashes to open up your sleepy morning eyes, and then follow with a dark brown or black mascara.  Try Lancome’s Definicils High Definition Mascara for long, defined lashes.

On eyelids, start with a light-coloured base: MAC makes an interesting eyeshadow product called ‘paint’ that is creamy but dries to a powdery finish.  Use it alone, or layer over with an eyeshadow in a neutral colour for added depth and richness.

Skip liquid liner altogether, or apply a pencil in a soft dark brown or black in light strokes to define your eyes without too much daytime drama.

Lips

Unless your work actually involves strutting down a runway, avoid bright reds or dark purples on your lips while at work or school.  For classic-but-not-boring lips that last through the day, start with a flesh-toned lip pencil to line your lips and fill them in before apply a brighter colour on top.  Lipsticks with pink or brown undertones works well in the daytime for virtually every skin tone and there’s a huge variety on the market.  For lighter skin tones, try Bare Escentuals’ bareMinerals 100% Natural Lipcolor in Rose Crepe and for darker skin tones, Smashbox’s Photo Finish Lipstick in Exquisite.

With your daytime face firmly in place and hopefully a cup of coffee in hand, you’re now set to take on the world! Or at least survive that 9:00am class or meeting.
