Sunny Sunshades and Sunglasses

April 6, 2010

What a brilliant weekend we just had in Toronto. I mean temperatures in the 20’s in early April is a luxury that I can barely remember from years past. And with sunny sunshine comes the best parts of summer… I’ll let the individual reader qualify that one on their own as I wouldn’t want to presume anything.

ANYWAY, one of my favorite things about summer is the need to purchase some new shades to amplify my coolness. Reaching back to the early days of my Oakley Frogskins to my ill-advised aviators and now with my all-black sunglasses I have always loved shades that deliver a great blend of functional and fashionista benefits.

In celebration of the almighty sunglasses, here’s a wonderful assortment of the styles that are turning heads for Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter 2010:

From his days as a design assistant to Jean Paul Gauthier right through to his European expansion with boutiques in major cities from Paris to London to Munich, Martin Margiela is always pushing the limits of design and his take on eye wear is no different (Martin Margiela):

Another interesting designer when it comes to sunglasses is Linda Farrow who recently collaborated with Jeremy Scott of the USA. Scott’s (first four pairs) and Raf Simons of the Belgian Simons’ (last pair):

With a slight nod to the Carrera sunglasses of the early 80’s these Lancier by Dita shades are quite unique and stylin’:

A nice take on the classic aviators is the work from Ann-Sofie Back with her dripping lenses (from Highsnobiety):

Let’s say that lenses aren’t your thing but you’re still looking for some simultaneous eye ball and scalp protection then these MYKITA x Romain Kremer designs from Germany are definitely for you:

Helmets not your thing, I understand. These beauties from House of Holland who collaborated with Linda Farrow are definitely worth a look:

But by far my favorites that I’ve seen so far this year come from Han Kjobenhavm Wolfgang Cola glasses which you can find at Oipolloi:

Well as always, stay cool FiM peeps and make sure your shades enable you to enjoy the fine scenes of summer without getting busted :-)

I love all of those sunglasses… And would most probably wear them at some point or another. A good representation of the different sub-cultures of the era that we are currently musing over.
