Fall 2010 Footwear Trends

July 21, 2010

See into the future with these Balenciaga FW2010 geo pumps.

Yesterday we looked at hair styling trends for the fall and today’s fall preview takes a strut down the runways of the world to see what shapes and details will define footwear in 2010. Our findings: for footwear this fall, it’s everything but simple.

Fur, colour, buckles, suede, lace, socks, chunky heels, slim stilettos.. pretty much everything goes. Here’s what we see coming to a sidewalk near you.

Footwear Trends for Fall 2010:

Trend #1: Woolly Mammoth

While Chanel took this one literally and showed volume on the gams with furry boots and an icicle heel no less (pictured below), the look for fall unanimously applauds warm and cuddly feet and legs. We’re feeling the muck-luck look since we northern hemispherers value survival warmth, so going heavy on the tights for fall with fur or lovely cable knits a la Prada is hardly a stretch.

Maybe you’ll take a shot at composing an outfit of ankle socks tucked into heels- there are a few different ways of pulling this off. In fashion trends, it’s all about balancing proportions and having the nerve to walk out the door with something that may raise a few eyebrows. To see how not to do it, check out Marc Jacobs’ take on the matter (5th below).

Trend #2: Booties, again and again

Okay, so if you’re the last person on earth to fail to adopt the bootie trend started oh, 3 years ago or so and still alive and kicking, rest assured you’re in good company (I have yet to jump on the bootie train, too.) While I wrote in the past that I would finally succumb to the ankle look, I didn’t. So here’s another promise to finally give in to this trend tide that is obviously bigger than my better judgment.

This time, I’m saying yes to bootie combos of lace, buckles, and open toes. My personal fave: the Christian Dior beaded lace and satin open-toe platform bootie with a scalloped edge (below).

Trend #3: Kittens and The Meow Factor

There’s been industry buzz about the kitten heel comeback for fall and we’re here to offer our 2 cents on the matter: kitten heels are not the cat’s meow and they’re pretty much ferile as a trend. Cold, unsexy, and like an unsmiling colleague, the kitten heel shoe is to be avoided at all cost.

Exhibit A: these sling-backs from Giambattista Valli (pictured below).

Seriously, these two-tone ponies just won’t cut it for this season’s looks. The proof is in the pudding: very few designers showcased the 2-inch and under varietals for fall. So if you like this height for practicality purposes, how about a wedge pump? or flats?

What really has us purring are stilettos, ornamentation on pumps, over-the-knee boots and athletic buckles all the way. So, in truth, Trend #3 really is Embellishment– whether it comes as texture with perforated leather, accents such as beading and trim, slouching suede- whatever strikes your fancy.

Michael Kors FW2010

After all that shoe inspiration we couldn’t resist slipping in our least favourite footlook for the season, these matte leather lace-ups a la stuffy Victorian by Marc Jacobs (pictured below).

Seriously, just don’t go there.

At first I was a little put off by the woolly mammoth look, but Prada and D&G have converted me! That Chanel boot, however…

Thanks for your comment! Yeah me too- I think it can look really fun. Not sure I can pull it off, though. Are you going to give it a try this fall?

Disgusting the majority “FASHION” compositions! How to wear socks with shoes? Or bare feet in boots? Disgusting Again! Still, those are nice boots and shoes, except the unuseful cavewoman eschimos afterski from Chanel.

Oh dear. Balenciaga’s shoe is the most ugly shoe I may have ever seen in my entire life. Chanel’s faux-fur boots may be the second. Just, why?

On the other hand, I really like the victorian Marc Jabocs. And I really support NOT wearing socks in heels. It just doesn’t do. My favorites are the lace Dior and D&G heels. How can one say no to them?
