Blue & Black: How Do you Wear it?

November 22, 2010

Recently I had a conversation with a very fashionable friend about the pairing of blue and black. Is it done? If so, how? After we discussed shades, textures, and forms, we didn’t really come up with a strong conclusion. At first I thought I hated the combination of blue and black but after our chat, I realized I might kind of like it. Kind of. So, before I buy any pieces of navy to compliment my almost-everything-is-black wardrobe, I thought it might be wise to test out a few outfits on our Fashion in Motion readers.

Black & Navy: Flirty fun

Black & Navy: Casual night out

Black & Navy: Work appropriate

Black & Navy: Ready for dinner

So? What do you think about wearing blue and black? Let us know!

Many thanks to Therese for inspiring this post and for spending countless hours chatting with me about fashion.

Someone once told me that black and blue should never be worn together. I have always begged to differ and this post just proves my point :)

I love blue and black together- it’s one of those ‘rules’ that stylists have been breaking for a few years now and I’ve done it myself. I went to a birthday party this weekend wearing a navy silk bow tie with a black top (and it looked AMAZING!).

It’s like black and brown- that used to me another no-no but it’s encouraged these days (men’s wear is a great example of black and brown combos).

You’ve found some great pairings in this feature- I think it’s a modern look that shows sophistication with colour. I’m all for blue and black!

Great to know that you approve of the B & B combo. I don’t own any navy at the moment so I can’t even just test it out…hence why I tried out the Polyvore route. I think it might be growing on me.

I also used to be anti- blue and black, but a wise woman (my mom) continues to tell me that they go together. If the Parisians can do it, why can’t we?

Some people have inquired about the blue dress featured in the “Ready for Dinner” look. It is Diane von Furstenberg and it’s available here: http://bit.ly/gfbYdg
If anyone else knows which retailers are selling it, please post a link here.
    Thanks!

Isn’t Commes des Garcons known for pairing navy and black? I’m not schooled in fashion, but I personally love pairing blue and black. I don’t always like to cover myself in black from head to toe, and I think that a nice navy can provide that “pop” while still being sophisticated.
