In with a roar, out with a roar

May 3, 2011

Laser-cutout sandals are lined up as spring's take on the footwear peep show. Above, Scotch platform sandal by Chinese Laundry, $125 at Capezio Shoes.

The caged foot fetish is still raging hot for spring. Seems like this trend has been around for a while- or at least since we first got a whiff of Russell Crowe battling it out in the ring, armoured chest, feet laced up in gladiator sandals and ready for anything in a tough-guy loin cloth:

Like movie, like trend: Gladiator The Extended Edition = the gladiator sandal trend. Seriously.

(We’d add that leggings is the other trend with shockingly impressive staying power but let’s not really going to go there today.)

The flexibility of these now-staples means that gladiator sandals are continuing to reincarnate with a tweak of colour, fabric and bling.

Surely you have a few pairs of lacy booties from last year or a strap-happy gladiator sandal kicking around. By now it’s nearly impossible to have avoided the trend.

This season, footwear sticks to neutrals in leather and leaves the bedazzler at home- well, for the most part. We’re quite huge fans of spring’s take on the cage: straps are woven and more cleverly arranged in nice tones from the coordinating ’70s colour palette. We’re also seeing fanciful geometric patterns cut into leather by lasers (who doesn’t love lasers?!) and sandals and flats alike neatly tied with leather laces that pick up where yesteryear’s prep trend left off.

Today we’re featuring the season’s blend of caged lovelies from Capezio Shoes. These will no doubt be responsible for a few kills this season.

To gladiator sandals and Russell: rarr.
