Fashion U: Trends in Academia

September 26, 2011

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been carefully observing the style of the university students where I live (I live in a big university town). It’s been interesting for me to realize that many of their outfits can be categorized into the following three categories. There are exceptions, of course, but these three looks really seem to be what the young female students are adopting this fall.

First up, I’ve noticed the ‘casual jeans plus tee with a twist’ look. The jeans, or jean shorts, are frayed and faded. The top of the season is a bit baggy, wide, and perhaps falls slightly off the shoulder. The outfit is paired with a slouchy bag in a neutral or contrasting colour and the footwear of choice is flat. A Starbucks in hand really completes the look.

Fashion U Casual: Victoria Beckham sunglasses, Zoe Karssan tank, Rick Owens top, Target notebooks, iPhone, Starbucks, Aura Que bag, QSW shorts, Reed Krakoff sandals, French Connection necklace, Carole earrings, YSL ring, Mark Davis ring

A second ensemble I’ve noticed has a bit of an edge. Studded boots, leggings and a roomy silk top are essential pieces in pulling off this look. Lots of layers of necklaces and rings adds more interest to the outfit.

Fashion U Edgy: Alexander Wang shirt, Herve Leger leggings, Seafolly sunglasses, Asos cuff, Gala cuff, Dream Catcher necklace, Jennifer Zeuner necklace, Aurelie Bidermann necklace, Mr. Wolf studded boots, Mulberry agenda, Blackberry, Asus computer, Phillip Lim tote

The final outfit is preppy all the way. A collared shirt, a classic blazer and good quality leather products are the key ingredients in this look. Moccasins are comfortable and complete the outfit quite well although some opt for the classic penny loafer instead. A Longchamp bag is a must!

Fashion U Preppy: Ralph Lauren shirt, Far Fetch blazer, Gucci belt, Levi's jeans, Apple Macbook, Minnetonka moccasins, Rayban sunglasses, pearl earrings, iPhone, Mathias Chaize rings, Piperlime necklace, Longchamp bag

What do you think? Are you observing these trends in your part of the world?

Isn’t it gorgeous? I love it (but of course the price tag isn’t my cup o’ tea).

I love the mocassins from the last trend feature, the Apple computer doesn’t hurt either.

Is this really what the kids are wearing these days-? Gosh they’re so stylish. That deep blush top by Rick Owens is so fun and I love all the accessories you picked out for the three themes. Back to class!

Yup – the students where I live are pretty well put together – minus those days when they go to school in sweat pants. I’m pretty sure they’re finding more affordable options at places like H & M and Forever 21.
